The Pipeyard Studio was founded in 2010 with a simple idea and absolutely no expectations of grandeur.
At the time, Joshua Dillon was a college student studying audio engineering and playing guitar in his band Robots In The Garden, which went on to win a Detroit Music Award for their EP Missing Pieces. What began as a small rehearsal space for the band quickly evolved into something much bigger.
After seeing the cost of recording at local studios, Joshua realized that if he wanted to create records at the level he envisioned, he would need to build the studio himself—piece by piece. What started as a simple plan quickly became an obsession as microphones, preamps, converters, cables, and analog equipment slowly filled the space.
Over the years, Pipeyard Studio has been built entirely by hand, with the help of family and friends—transforming from a young musician’s experiment into a fully functional professional recording studio. Today, Pipeyard stands as one of Michigan’s most unique independent studios.
The studio has worked on projects with national and internationally recognized artists, including work connected with Billboard and iTunes chart-topping bands from many genres of music throughout the Detroit and Midwest music scenes.
Pipeyard Studio is built around a large live tracking room, designed to capture full bands with energy and space. The studio features extensive analog wiring and patching, allowing sessions to flow naturally through high-end hardware rather than relying solely on digital processing.
At the heart of the control room sits a 56-channel analog Euphonix console, surrounded by a large collection of boutique microphones, vintage-inspired analog outboard gear, and high-definition converters.
The studio also maintains a deep collection of professional instruments and amplifiers including Mesa, Marshall, Orange, EVH, Bad Cat, and other boutique guitar amplifiers, alongside a DW drum kit designed for professional recording sessions.
Every piece of gear was carefully selected to give artists access to a wide range of tones without needing to leave the studio.
Perhaps the most unique aspect of Pipeyard Studio is its setting. Located on a private gated countryside property, the studio offers artists something many commercial studios cannot—peace, privacy, and a creative environment free from distractions.
Pipeyard has grown from a young musician’s curiosity into a serious creative facility where artists come to write, track, and produce records.
Whether you are recording a full album, tracking drums, producing vocals, or completing post-production work, Pipeyard Studio provides a professional space built by musicians, for musicians.
